Are you a young LGBTQ individual looking to understand and embrace your identity? Or perhaps you’re a dedicated volunteer at an LGBTQ center, eager to enhance your ability to support the youth in your community? If so, you’ve come to the right place!

YouthLink is leading the charge in fostering safe, supportive spaces for LGBTQ youth, providing them with the essential resources and tools they need to flourish. At the heart of this mission is imi—a revolutionary mental health tool specifically designed for LGBTQ teens. Through science-backed guidance and empowering resources, imi helps young individuals navigate the complexities of identity exploration and minority stress.

Discovering imi: A Lifeline for LGBTQ Teens

imi stands for "I’m In" and is a series of interactive guides tailored for LGBTQ teens. Developed through collaboration with Hopelab and It Gets Better Project, and informed by the input of over 600 LGBTQ youth, imi offers essential tools for self-discovery and coping with the unique challenges faced by this community. The program's creation involved thorough research in the field of sexual and gender minority youth mental health, ensuring that the content resonates and effectively addresses the real experiences of LGBTQ teens.

How imi Actually Works

imi consists of four key modules that assist LGBTQ teens in navigating their mental health journeys:

  • Identity Exploration: Helping youth understand and embrace their identities.
  • Coping Strategies: Providing tools to manage stress and adversity.
  • Peer Support: Encouraging connection with others who share similar experiences.
  • Empowerment: Building confidence in their ability to cope with challenges.

In testing, imi has shown promise in enhancing LGBTQ teens' coping skills and confidence. Feedback from users highlights its positive impact, with many stating how it helped them view themselves in a more positive light and provided them with uplifting, relatable content.

Connecting imi to Safe Spaces

By incorporating tools like imi into LGBTQ youth centers, organizations can create safe and inclusive environments where young people feel supported and validated. This aligns with YouthLink's mission of enhancing community centers to better serve LGBTQ youth through:

  • Networking: Establishing connections among youth center leaders and professionals.
  • Customized Training: Offering specialized workshops that equip staff to address the needs of LGBTQ youth effectively.
  • Resource Sharing: Distributing valuable content and best practices through platforms like The Smorgasbord e-newsletter.
